Local History

The Acjachemen are the Indigenous people of the area, living for thousands of years in villages along Aliso Creek.

The land was part of the 26,000-acre Moulton Ranch; the Moulton family took title in the 1890s to acreage originally granted to Juan Avila by the Mexican government in 1842.

In 1976 the Mission Viejo Company bought 6,600 acres to create a new planned community; the master plan (for about 20,000 homes and a population near 50,000) was approved by Orange County in 1979.

Homes were first offered for sale in March 1982, and the community's first family moved in that November.

Soka University of America, a private liberal-arts college founded in 1987 (current campus opened 2001), sits on a hilltop with architecture styled after an Italian/Tuscan hillside village and a secular curriculum emphasizing peace, human rights, and coexistence with nature.
