Founded in 1887 by John T. Berry near the Fort Worth and Denver Railway; originally called 'Oneida.'

In 1888 the settlement was relocated eastward when developer Henry B. Sanborn argued the original site was flood-prone; the name became Amarillo, likely from the abundant yellow wildflowers or nearby Amarillo Lake and Creek.

Discovery of the Cliffside gas field's rich helium content led to the first U.S. helium extraction plant in 1929, and the federal helium industry made the city the self-styled 'Helium Capital of the World.'
