Local History

Founded in 1864 as a railroad station stop on the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad and named after Oakes Ames, a Massachusetts congressman and financier tied to the transcontinental railroad; it was platted through the work of Cynthia Olive Duff and rail magnate John Insley Blair, and incorporated in 1869.
