Named for Chief William 'Adam' Anderson, whose Lenape name Kikthawenund meant 'creaking boughs' and whose village was known as Andersontown.

John Berry laid out the first town plat on November 7, 1827, the county seat moved from Pendleton to Anderson in 1828, and the town was incorporated in December 1838 with about 350 residents.

Natural gas was discovered March 31, 1887, drawing glass factories and other industry and earning the 'Queen City of the Gas Belt' nickname; the gas fields were exhausted by about 1912, triggering an industrial slump.

The city then became an auto town, with General Motors operations (Delco Remy and Guide Lamp/Fisher Guide) as the dominant employers; GM employment reached nearly 22,000 in the 1970s before collapsing to a few thousand by 2006.
