Local History

Named for the junction of the Apache Trail and the Old West Highway (U.S. Route 60); traveling salesman George Cleveland Curtis campaigned in the early 1920s to rename the settlement from Youngsberg Junction to Apache Junction, feeling the old name lacked color.

First appeared on the U.S. Census in 1970 as an unincorporated village and formally incorporated as a city on November 24, 1978.

Bound up with the Lost Dutchman legend: German immigrant Jacob Waltz, documented in Arizona Territory from 1863 to 1891, died in Phoenix on October 25, 1891 without revealing the source of the rich gold ore found beneath his deathbed.

Prospectors searched the base of Superstition Mountain for gold as early as the late 1860s, and a major gold strike at nearby Goldfield in 1892 briefly boomed the area.

Culture and Community

The Arizona Renaissance Festival, held each February and March just southeast of the city since 1988, with jousting, falconry, and feasts.

Goldfield Ghost Town, a recreated 1890s mining town with the only operating narrow-gauge railroad in Arizona, staged gunfights, mine tours, and gold panning.
