Settled in 1847 as three riverside villages, Grand Chute, Appleton and Lawesburg, which merged in 1853 into the incorporated village of Appleton.

Named for Boston merchant Samuel Appleton, who donated $10,000 to found Lawrence University's library despite never visiting Wisconsin.

Outagamie County was created in 1851 from Brown County; the area had been hunting and fishing grounds of the Menominee, Ho-Chunk and Meskwaki (Fox) peoples.
