Local History

Founded in 1834 when brothers Joseph and Samuel McCarty, from New York, settled along the Fox River at a site they first called McCarty's Mill, later renamed Aurora after a town in New York.

The settlements on opposite banks of the Fox River (the west bank had been named Hartford) united as the single municipality of Aurora in 1857.

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad extended into Aurora in 1849 and located its repair and construction shops there, making the city a major rail hub.

In 1881 Aurora installed electric street lighting, among the first U.S. cities to do so, and adopted the official nickname 'City of Lights' in 1908.

The Paramount Theatre, a 1931 Rapp & Rapp Art Deco movie palace, is now a Broadway-caliber venue drawing about 350,000 patrons a year.
