Local History

Pioneer William "Billy" G. Moore arrived in Arizona in the late 1860s and by 1880 settled near the Agua Fria River, naming his settlement "Coldwater" for the river and a local spring.

Moore ran the Coldwater Stage Station, general store and saloon, one of the earliest stage stations in the region.

A post office was established in 1896 near the Avondale Ranch, and the community eventually took the ranch's name.

Avondale was incorporated in December 1946 and gained full city status in 1959.
