Local History

In 1861, while surveying the first state road through the Huron County wilderness, Rudolph Papst and George Willis Pack camped at the future townsite and found a much-used, badly damaged axe.

At Pack's suggestion, Papst recorded the spot as 'Bad Axe Camp' in the survey minutes and on a trail sign, and the name stuck through 'Bad Axe Corners.'

Settlement began around 1865; the first post office opened in 1870.

Huron County's seat moved from Sand Beach (Harbor Beach) to Port Austin, then in 1873 to Bad Axe after fire destroyed the earlier courthouse.

Culture and Community

The Huron Community Fair, held in Bad Axe and celebrating agriculture and youth since 1868, is the region's signature annual event.

Community traditions include Cruise Night and an annual Christmas Parade downtown.
