Local History

The site was a fordable crossing of the Deschutes River; rancher John Y. Todd established the 'Farewell Bend Ranch' in the 1870s, and the post office later shortened the name to Bend.

Bend was platted on May 28, 1904 and incorporated as a city on January 4, 1905, with A. H. Goodwillie as first mayor.

When Deschutes County was carved from the western half of Crook County in 1916, Bend was named the county seat.
