Local History

The site was settled in 1819 by Amasa Bagley and was known as Bagley's Corners and Bloomfield Center before the present name was adopted in the 1890s.

It remained a farming area until around the turn of the 20th century, when wealthy Detroit residents began buying the land.

Bloomfield Hills incorporated as a village in 1927 and as a city in 1932, partly to avoid being annexed into the growing city of Birmingham.

In 1927 Detroit News publisher George G. Booth and his wife Ellen Scripps Booth established the Cranbrook Foundation on their roughly 300-acre estate, launching the schools, academy, and institute that followed.
