Local History

Mississippian-culture Native Americans (locally called the Mound or Stone Box Indians) built ceremonial earthwork mounds here in the first millennium CE; the largest survives at Primm Historic Park.

European-American planters and farmers arrived in the late 1700s, many on North Carolina land grants awarded to Revolutionary War soldiers; early families included the Sneeds, Moores, Hardemans, Hunts and Crocketts.

Sitting halfway between Nashville and Franklin, the area grew wealthy on tobacco and by the Civil War was among the richest districts in the state.

On March 25, 1863, Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union-held Brentwood to seize the Nashville & Decatur Railroad; casualties were reported at 305 Union and 6 Confederate, and much of the town was destroyed.
