Local History

In 1877 Thomas Newt Clanton led a group of settlers from Creston, Iowa, to the area that would become Buckeye.

Settler Malie (Malin) M. Jackson developed about 10 miles of the Buckeye Canal from 1884 to 1886 and named it for Ohio's nickname, 'the Buckeye State.'

The town was founded in 1888 and originally named 'Sidney' after Jackson's Ohio hometown; the name was legally changed to Buckeye in 1910.

The railroad arrived in 1910, and the business district was relocated to accommodate the rail station.
