Local History

The Colorado River Valley's earliest inhabitants were the Mojave (Pipa Aha Macav, 'People by the River'); Spanish explorer Melchor Diaz documented the area in 1540.

In 1864 the site was Hardyville, a river settlement founded by New York entrepreneur William Harrison Hardy, who ran a Colorado River ferry and steamboat landing and was among Arizona's richest men.

Hardyville faded into a ghost town after railroads bypassed the river, then was revived as a construction camp during the building of Davis Dam (1942-1953).

The city took its name from a bull's-head-shaped rock formation in the river; the rock was submerged when Davis Dam impounded Lake Mohave in the 1950s.
