Local History

Land originated as two Spanish/Mexican ranchos, Rancho San Rafael and Rancho La Providencia, purchased in 1867 by Dr. David Burbank, a New Hampshire dentist who ran a successful sheep operation on the property.

The community officially became Burbank on May 1, 1887, after Dr. Burbank sold land tied to the Southern Pacific Railroad line.

Incorporated as a city on July 8, 1911, making it the first city in the San Fernando Valley to incorporate.

The motion picture business arrived in the 1920s; First National Pictures (later absorbed by Warner Bros.) bought land in 1926, and by 1937 Warner Bros. had made its Burbank lot its main headquarters, which it remains.
