Platted in August 1883 by railroad developer Robert E. Strahorn and the Idaho and Oregon Land Improvement Company, spawned by construction of the Oregon Short Line Railroad; within four months it had roughly 600 residents, about 40 businesses, and two newspapers.

Named after Alexander Caldwell, a U.S. senator from Kansas and Strahorn's business partner.

The College of Idaho was founded in 1891; Canyon County was created from part of Ada County in 1892, with Caldwell as county seat.

Former Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg was assassinated by a bomb at the gate of his Caldwell home on December 30, 1905; the killer, Harry Orchard, implicated Western Federation of Miners leaders, leading to the nationally famous 'trial of the century' involving Big Bill Haywood and Clarence Darrow.

Culture and Community

Caldwell Night Rodeo, running for about a century and billed as the first rodeo in the Pacific Northwest held under the lights, draws more than 45,000 fans over seven August nights and was named Idaho's Top Large Rodeo of the Year.

Winter Wonderland at Indian Creek Plaza lights downtown with over 1.5 million lights, plus ice skating, horse-drawn carriage rides, and winter markets.
