Local History

The area was settled in the 1840s within the Peters Colony grant; the A.W. Perry family claimed land around Trinity Mills in 1844 and helped establish an early mill.

The town was most likely named after Carrollton, Illinois, the former home of many settlers, which was itself named for Founding Father Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland.

The Dallas-Wichita Railroad through Trinity Mills in 1878 and the St. Louis Southwestern ('Cotton Belt') crossing the Katy in 1888 turned Carrollton into a shipping center for cotton, cottonseed, livestock, and grain.

After World War II the economy shifted from 'grain and gravel' to diversified business; the population exploded 193% between 1970 and 1980 (from 13,855 to 40,595), reaching 133,434 by the 2020 census, the 27th-most populous city in Texas.
