Local History

The area was long inhabited by the Cahuilla people; the surrounding Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians still holds reservation land here in a checkerboard pattern of alternating square-mile sections.

In 1850 Colonel Henry Washington, a surveyor and reportedly a relative of George Washington, surveyed the area and named Cathedral Canyon for rock formations said to resemble a cathedral; the city later took its name from the canyon.

Development began with a housing subdivision in 1925; during 1931-1941, Depression-era nightclubs such as the Dunes Club, 139 Club, and Cove Club operated in the area.

Incorporated as a city on November 16, 1981, making it a relatively young municipality.
