Local History

Named for Fr. Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix, an 18th-century French Jesuit explorer who, by tradition, sheltered on nearby Fisherman's Island during a storm.

European-American fishermen settled the Pine River mouth in 1852; the 1853 'Battle of Pine River' was a clash between townspeople and Strangite Mormons from Beaver Island over jury duty.

The town plat was completed by John S. Dixon in 1866; Charlevoix County was organized in 1869 with Charlevoix as county seat.

Incorporated as a village in 1879 and as a city in 1905.

Culture and Community

The Venetian Festival, dating to 1930 when it began as a parade of candle-lit boats on Round Lake, is the signature summer event, now featuring a lighted boat parade, fireworks, free concerts, a carnival and street parades.

Downtown's annual petunia planting, begun in 1982, puts tens of thousands of petunias along the streets each Memorial Day week.

Ernest Hemingway spent boyhood summers in the area and set several Nick Adams stories on and near Lake Charlevoix.
