Local History

Founded in 1844 by Jacob Sammons, a cooper from Fort Mackinac; the early settlement on Duncan Bay was known as Duncan, with a company town called Duncan City serving the lumber and shipping industries.

The area officially took the name Cheboygan in 1870, incorporated as a village in 1871, and became a city in 1889.

During the lumbering era of roughly 1870 to 1910 the county boomed, drawing people from New England, Canada, Poland, and Sweden.

A lock built in 1869 and rebuilt in 1927 turned a shallow channel into a vital route linking the Inland Waterway with Lake Huron.
