Local History

First settled around 1820 by pioneer Cyrus Beckwith; the surrounding area was organized as Sylvan Township in 1834.

Platted by Elisha and James Congdon in the 1830s; originally called Kedron/Kendon, it was renamed Chelsea in 1850 after Elisha Congdon's hometown of Chelsea, Massachusetts, as the Michigan Central Railroad depot opened.

Incorporated as a village in 1889 and became a home-rule city in 2004.
