Local History

First settlement was the Moravian mission Gnadenhutten, founded 1782 by Rev. David Zeisberger to convert local Native Americans; it was abandoned by 1786 and is remembered by Moravian Drive, the township's oldest road.

Organized as 'Huron Township' on August 12, 1818, named for what was then called the Huron River.

On July 17, 1824, the Michigan Territorial Legislature renamed both the township and the river after DeWitt Clinton, popular New York governor (1817-1823) whose Erie Canal opened Michigan to settlers, to end confusion with the other Huron River south of Detroit.

As of the 2020 census the township had 100,513 residents, making it the most populous township in Michigan and the state's 8th-most populous community overall.

Culture and Community

Home to the Italian American Cultural Society, which relocated from Warren to Romeo Plank Road in 2004.

Rapper Eminem (Marshall Mathers) has lived in the township, and hip-hop producer J Dilla (James Yancey) lived there until 2006.
