Local History

Founded in 1836 by businessman Jesse R. Collier, who laid out lots on a tract once known as Oak Grove, bought space in the Memphis Enquirer, and advertised 'The Town of Collier for Sale.'

Site of the First and Second Battles of Collierville (October and November 1863) during the Civil War; the town was nearly destroyed, with reports that only three structures were left standing.

The historic town square began taking shape in 1867 after Harrison Irby and Virginius Leake bought 90 acres next to the Memphis & Charleston Railroad and started selling lots; the town was rechartered in 1870 under Mayor James B. Abington.

Cotton, dairy, and manufacturing drove growth into the 20th century; by 1922 resident Jack Clayton reportedly kept 'probably the largest herd of Guernsey in Tennessee.'

Culture and Community

Fair on the Square, an arts-and-crafts festival on the town square, has run every May since 1976.

Symphony in the Rose Garden is an annual May performance in the town's gardens.
