Settled in 1867 by about 30 pioneer families led by Griffith Dickenson Compton, who traveled south by wagon train from Stockton seeking farmland rather than gold.

Originally called Gibsonville, then Comptonville, the name was later shortened to Compton; the city was officially incorporated on May 11, 1888, with a population of about 500, holding its first City Council meeting on May 14, 1888.

The March 10, 1933 Long Beach earthquake killed residents, toppled schools and wrecked the main business district; reconstruction rebuilt the downtown in Art Deco and Modernist styles, including the iconic City Hall.

After World War II, Compton shed its agrarian identity as farmland was developed into tract housing for veterans and industrial workers, and it grew into a center of African American political power in the mid-20th century.

A foundational birthplace of West Coast hip-hop, home to N.W.A (Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube), Coolio, The Game, YG and Kendrick Lamar.
