Local History

The land was Bay Miwok territory before Spanish contact; in 1834 the Mexican government granted Rancho Monte del Diablo to Salvio Pacheco.

Pacheco laid out the town in 1868-1869 as Todos Santos ('All Saints'), and the name was soon changed to Concord.

The community became an orchard, walnut, and poultry center, especially after the Oakland, Antioch and Eastern Railway arrived in 1912; Concord incorporated on February 5, 1905.

On July 17, 1944, the nearby Port Chicago munitions explosion killed 320 sailors and civilians and was felt 30 miles away; the aftermath, in which 258 Black sailors refused to resume loading, led to the Navy's largest mutiny trial.

Culture and Community

Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck was born in Concord; a park near Concord High School was renamed Dave Brubeck Park in his honor in 2006.

The city hosted the Concord Jazz Festival (from 1975) and was home to the Concord Records jazz label until its 1999 sale.

Todos Santos Plaza hosts summer concerts, movie nights, and a farmers market as the city's social heart.
