Organized March 11, 1837 out of land that had been part of Kalamazoo Township; the original act set off Cooper together with what became Alamo Township.

A small hamlet called Cooper Center grew up at the geographic center of the township.

Suburbanized sharply after World War II, with population climbing from 1,605 in 1930 to 3,451 by 1950, then adopting charter-township status under Michigan's 1947 Charter Township Act.
