Coral Ridge Properties, led by Fort Lauderdale builders James S. Hunt and Joe Taravella, bought 3,869 acres from the Lyons family in December 1961 for $1 million, then added 6,000 more acres in 1965.

The city was officially chartered on July 10, 1963, and its name derives from the developer, Coral Ridge Properties; rejected alternatives included 'Curran Village,' 'Pompano Springs,' and 'Quartermore.'

A master plan for 50,000 residents was drawn by 1964; the first sale of 536 lots on July 22, 1964, netted $1.6 million, and the promotional covered bridge was built that same year.

Coral Ridge Properties was acquired by Westinghouse in 1966, and the city grew explosively, adding more than 35,000 residents each decade through the 1970s, '80s, and '90s to reach about 134,394 people by the 2020 census.

Culture and Community

The Coral Springs Center for the Arts (opened 1990) seats 1,471 and anchors a cultural campus that also includes the Coral Springs Museum of Art.
