Local History

Named from the Potawatomi word 'dewje'og' ('fishing near home water'); the region was ceded by the Potawatomi, Chippewa and Ottawa in the 1821 Treaty of Chicago.

Platted in 1848 by Nicholas Cheesborough and Jacob Benson when the Michigan Central Railroad pushed through and needed a depot and water stop near the creek; incorporated as a village in 1863 and a city in 1877.

On October 1, 1854, Dowagiac was the destination of the very first 'Orphan Train' of children sent west from New York City by the Children's Aid Society.

Grew into a manufacturing center late in the 19th century, hosting four furnace/stove companies and earning the label 'Furnace City of America.'

Culture and Community

The Dogwood Fine Arts Festival, running since the 1990s, brings authors, musicians and commissioned public sculptures to town each May.
