Local History

Settlement of the area began around 1845 when Illinois native Crawford Trees purchased several thousand acres south of Camp Dallas.

In 1880 the Chicago, Texas & Mexican Central Railway reached the area and built 'Duncan Switch,' named for a line foreman; postmaster Charles P. Nance renamed the community Duncanville in 1882.

Fearing annexation by neighboring Dallas, residents incorporated a 225-acre city on August 2, 1947.

During the Cold War the former Army landing field became Duncanville Air Force Station, headquarters for four Nike-Hercules missile sites defending Dallas/Fort Worth from Soviet bombers.

Culture and Community

Duncanville High School's teams, the Panthers and Pantherettes ('Panther Nation'), are a Texas athletic dynasty; the boys basketball team won state titles in 1991, 1999, 2007, 2019, and 2021, and the girls program has won more than a dozen state championships.
