Local History

The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee, part of the broader region near the Chattahoochee River.

Settlement was established in the early 1830s and named for Major Charles Archibald Alexander Dunwody (1828-1905), son of Roswell Manufacturing Company co-founder John Dunwody; the extra "o" came from a misspelling on a banking note.

By 1853 the area had cotton mills employing about 300 people, the largest cotton factory complex in North Georgia, and a Roswell-to-Atlanta railroad was built to move mill goods during the Civil War.

President Theodore Roosevelt made a campaign whistle-stop in Dunwoody in 1905 via the Roswell Railroad.

Culture and Community

The Lemonade Days Festival, held each spring at Brook Run Park and run by the Dunwoody Preservation Trust, began in 1999 as a relief effort for families hit by the 1998 tornado and features carnival rides, live music and an Honorary Lemonade Days Queen.
