Local History

The name traces to Rancho El Cajón; 'El Cajón' was first recorded on September 10, 1821, describing the boxed-in shape of the valley, whose foothills mission padres used as a natural barrier to keep cattle from straying.

In 1845 California Governor Pío Pico granted about 48,800 acres (11 square leagues) of the valley to María Antonia Estudillo, daughter of San Diego alcalde José Antonio Estudillo.

Amaziah Lord Knox, an early settler, built the valley's first hotel (the Knox Hotel) in 1876, and the settlement that grew around the stage stop became the nucleus of the town.

El Cajon was incorporated as a city on November 12, 1912.
