Local History

Delos Blodgett and James Stimson first reached the territory in 1850, traveling by canoe up the Muskegon River as far as Doc and Tom Creek; the first settler in Evart proper was Joseph Smith from England in 1857.

The community was named for Civil War veteran Perry "Frank" (Perry Oliver) Everts, who bought 80 acres; when the post office opened on August 16, 1870, the name was misspelled "Evart" and the error became permanent.

Evart was platted in 1872 by James Kennedy and lumber baron Delos A. Blodgett and organized as a village that same year.

A strategic sorting point for timber floated down the Muskegon River during the lumber era; James Kennedy built the first sawmill in Evart Township.

Culture and Community

Hosts the Original Dulcimer Players Club (ODPC) FunFest, described as the largest hammered dulcimer festival in the world, held the third weekend of July at the Osceola County Fairgrounds.

The Original Dulcimer Players Club, a Michigan non-profit dedicated to preserving the hammered dulcimer, was formed in 1963; the first 'Non-Electrical Musical FunFest' was held in June 1974.

The festival offers 200-plus workshops plus stage shows, camping, parking-lot picking, song circles, Irish jams, gospel singing, open mic, and contra dancing; admission has run about $10 per day or $20 for the weekend, kids 12 and under free.
