Local History

The area was originally home to the Snohomish and other Coast Salish peoples; the townsite was laid out in 1890.

Investors Henry Hewitt Jr. and Charles L. Colby conceived the city during an Alaskan cruise as a would-be "Pittsburgh of the West," backed by roughly $800,000 from oil magnate John D. Rockefeller.

The city was named after Charles Colby's teenage son, Everett Colby.

Everett became the western terminus of a Northern Pacific rail connection and won the county seat from the city of Snohomish in 1897.
