Local History

Established in 1834 as 'Dibbleville,' after settler Clark Dibble, who came from New York and claimed 40 acres of government land.

Platted in 1837 as 'Fentonville' by William M. Fenton, who later became Michigan's lieutenant governor.

By legend, on August 24, 1837, William Fenton, Robert LeRoy and Benjamin Rockwell played poker to decide the town's name; Fenton won, and LeRoy received LeRoy Street as a consolation prize, with later hands naming additional streets.

Incorporated as a village in 1863 and as a city in 1964; the post office used 'Fentonville' from 1837 to 1886 before adopting 'Fenton.'
