Local History

Fort Findlay was built in 1812 by Colonel James Findlay during the War of 1812 to shelter troops crossing the Great Black Swamp; the town took his name.

Town lots were laid out in 1821 by future Ohio Governor Joseph Vance and Elnathan Corry, and Findlay served as an Underground Railroad stop before the Civil War.

An 1880s oil-and-natural-gas boom brought rapid prosperity; the Ohio Oil Company (later Marathon Oil) moved its headquarters to Findlay in 1905.

The "Flag City, USA" identity began when resident John B. Cooke, a Sons of the American Revolution member, rallied the city to fly flags on Flag Day, June 14, 1968; a U.S. House resolution formally recognized Findlay as Flag City, USA in 1974.
