Local History

Flint Township was organized on March 2, 1836; the first permanent settlers were Elijah Carman and family, who built a log cabin around 1835, soon followed by Jesse Torrey's family, who settled roughly 400 acres in October 1836.

The Fentonville Plank Toll Road was built in 1851 (one cent per mile), carrying freight wagons between Detroit and Flint along what is now Fenton Road.

The township originally covered a much larger area, spinning off communities such as Burton, Clayton, and Flushing during the 19th century.

It was briefly renamed 'Garland Township' from 1855 to 1856 after Burton separated, then reverted to Flint Township.
