Local History

The land was part of the Chickasaw Nation until treaties in the early 1800s ceded it to the federal government, opening it to settlement.

Founded in 1818 by the Cypress Land Company and named after Florence, Italy by Italian surveyor Ferdinand Sannoner; it became Lauderdale County seat immediately and incorporated in 1826.

Andrew Jackson was among the roughly 180 buyers who acquired lots at the first land sales; the town sat on Jackson's Military Road near the Muscle Shoals rapids of the Tennessee River.

Florence became one of the Southeast's first textile centers, but the Civil War devastated it as the town changed hands repeatedly between Union and Confederate forces.
