Founded October 26, 1799 by Abram Maury Jr. and named after Benjamin Franklin, a friend of Dr. Hugh Williamson (the county's namesake); Maury reportedly wanted to call it Marthasville after his wife Martha, who insisted on 'Franklin' instead.
