Local History

There is archaeological evidence of a camp in the area about 12,000 years ago, and the Wolastoqiyik farmed upriver from the site.

French colonists built Fort Nashwaak on the north side of the river in the 1690s as the capital of Acadia; it withstood a British attack in 1696.

Acadians settled Pointe Ste-Anne in 1713, but the community of about 83 was destroyed and its people exiled during the 1758 expulsion of the Acadians.

United Empire Loyalists arrived in 1783; in 1785 Governor Thomas Carleton had the site named Frederick's Town, for Prince Frederick, Duke of York, soon shortened to Fredericton.
