Local History

Hull, on the north shore of the Ottawa River, was founded in 1800 by Philemon Wright, who came from Woburn, Massachusetts with his family and roughly 25-33 laborers to build an agricultural settlement first called Wright's Town.

In 1806 Wright launched the Ottawa Valley timber trade, floating the first square-timber raft down the Ottawa River to Quebec City.

The city takes its name from the Gatineau River, itself named for Nicolas Gatineau, a 17th-century fur trader who reportedly drowned in the river around 1683; Indigenous (Anishinaabe) names for the river include Tenagadino Zibi.

Gatineau was incorporated as a village in 1933, became a town in 1946, and a city in 1975.
