Local History

The Wyandot (Huron) inhabited the area, which French settlers called 'Chenal de la Presque Isle,' or 'Channel of the Near Island'; English arrivals renamed it Gibraltar after 'the greatest rock of all.'

The site was first settled as early as 1811 and platted on March 14, 1837 by trustees of the Gibraltar & Flat Rock Company; a post office spelled 'Gibralter' opened October 2, 1837.

Originally part of Brownstown Township, Gibraltar incorporated as a village in 1954, with Hy Dahlka as first village president, and became a city in 1961 under first mayor Charles Shumate.

The War of 1812 Battle of Brownstown was fought on ground where Carlson High School now stands.

Water is central to daily life; residents can boat, kayak, and fish directly from canal-side homes.

Gibraltar hosts an annual Fourth of July celebration with a parade, live music, amusement rides, food and vendors, and a petting farm, a tradition running about six decades.
