Local History

The settlement grew from the village of San Ysidro on Rancho San Ysidro, land granted to Californio ranchero Ygnacio Ortega in 1809.

After Ortega's death in 1833, his daughter Clara Ortega de Gilroy and son-in-law John Gilroy, a Scottish immigrant, inherited the largest portion and developed the town.

The city was founded in 1850 and incorporated in 1870, taking John Gilroy's name.
