Local History

The area was settled in the 1670s; some of the earliest planters came from Barbados, drawn to the rich soil along a Cooper River tributary.

It was the home base of the 'Goose Creek Men,' a politically and economically powerful faction that repeatedly challenged the Lords Proprietors and produced colonial governors James Moore and Robert Daniell.

Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century wealth was built on rice and indigo; the Civil War, emancipation, and later hurricanes destroyed the rice-field dikes and ended the plantation era.

A portion of the old Goose Creek area was incorporated as a new town in 1961, after which population jumped roughly fivefold, from 3,656 in 1970 to 17,811 by 1980.
