Pawnee peoples lived in the area when Europeans arrived in the late 1700s; the name comes from La Grande Île (French for 'the Big Island'), the largest island in the Platte River, coined by 18th-century French fur traders.

German immigrants established a settlement near the river in 1857, then relocated it a few miles north to the present site in 1866 to be on the Union Pacific Railroad.

The town was incorporated in 1872; by 1870 it had 1,057 residents, and three converging railroads soon made it a regional shipping hub.
