Local History

The area was long an Odawa (Ottawa) homeland on Little Traverse Bay and the site of the French Jesuit mission "L'Arbre Croche" (Crooked Tree); in 1847 it held Michigan's largest concentration of Native Americans.

French traders called the settlement Petit Traverse before American settlers renamed it Harbor Springs; the village incorporated in 1881.

Little Traverse (now Harbor Springs) was chosen as county seat on April 27, 1857, and served as the unofficial seat until 1902.

The mid-1800s lumber era gave way to a resort boom after the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad arrived in the late 1800s, bringing wealthy vacationers from Chicago and Detroit and lining the town with grand hotels.
