Local History

In 1836 three entrepreneurs named Dibble, Kingsbury, and Kendall bought 480 acres along the Thornapple River from Detroit banker Eurotas P. Hastings for about $3,000 and platted the town, naming it after him.

The surrounding township was organized in 1837; Hastings was designated county seat of Barry County in 1843.

Hastings incorporated as a village in 1855 and as a city on March 11, 1871.

Stagecoach service linked Hastings to Grand Rapids and Battle Creek starting in 1848, and the first railroad train arrived in 1869.

Barry-Roubaix, established in 2009 and held in Hastings since 2013, is billed as the world's largest gravel road race, welcoming more than 5,000 cyclists and generating roughly $1 million in local economic impact.
