Settlement began in the 1850s; pioneer John Henry Cram and his sons founded a settlement called Cramville, and settler Henry Rabel arrived in 1857, giving the area the early name 'Rabel Springs.'

The Southern Pacific Railroad reached the area in 1875, spurring citrus packing houses.
