Local History

The land was acquired by treaty from the Chickasaw on October 19, 1818; Madison County was created by the Tennessee General Assembly on November 7, 1821.

Originally called Alexandria, the town was renamed Jackson in 1822 to honor Andrew Jackson, who had negotiated the Chickasaw cession.

Rich alluvial soil supported a cotton and plantation economy in the early decades.

Railroads arrived in 1851 and made Jackson a major junction for the Illinois Central; by the mid-20th century the city was served by about 15 passenger trains a day.
