The name traces to a mapmaker's error: the Spanish rendering 'Jobe' (for the Hobe Indian tribe) was misread as 'Jove,' which later cartographers connected to the Roman god Jupiter.

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, designed by then-Lieutenant George G. Meade (later a Civil War general), was completed in 1860 at a cost of more than $60,000; it was painted red in 1910 to cover humidity damage.
