Local History

Founded in 1906 when J.W. Cannon bought roughly 1,000 acres north of Concord to build a planned mill village; production at Cannon Manufacturing began in 1908.

In 1907 Cannon petitioned Cabarrus County to name the village Kannapolis, said to combine 'Kannon' with the Greek 'polis' to mean 'city of looms.'

By 1914 the operation was billed as the world's largest producer of towels and sheets, at one point turning out more than 300,000 towels a day.

Remained the largest unincorporated community in the United States until it finally incorporated as a city in 1984, two years after billionaire David Murdock's company bought Cannon Mills.

Culture and Community

Home of the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, the Low-A Carolina League affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, whose name honors the Cannon Mills legacy.
